It was internationally known by its Dutch name until Indonesia achieved full independence in 1949, when the city was renamed Jakarta.
The Dutch government granted the Dutch East India Company a monopoly on Asian trade in 1602.
The Dutch Ethical Policy was introduced in 1901, expanding educational opportunities for the indigenous population of the Dutch East Indies.

The former mansions and shops that at the time had been occupied by ethnic Chinese people, were converted and renovated into offices in the period 19001942.Many of the canals dried out and refilled.Pinansia is the local Chinese dialect of Dutch Financienstraat, "Financial Street", now Jalan Pinangsia 1Pineau County. The most significant feature of many of the buildings found in the district is that they are built from limestone.Another excellent example of native limestone used in one of Batavia's churches is the Calvary Episcopal Church, which was built as a gift from John Van Nortwick.The historic district also complements the efforts to preserve a significant part of Batavia history and enhance its future.This may be where there were other examples.
