One of the letters from Bukowski is unauthenticated, most probably forgeries, and yet, I found these words to be lovely. There are over 100 preserved letters in PDF format at Bukowski.net, and I have looked through each one. These are folks who know far more about the works of the poet Charles Bukowski than I ever will, but I decided to take the afternoon and go through his archived letters on Bukowski.net.
Poet Charles Bukowski always used the persons first name in the greeting, even to new writers, and he rarely, if ever, signed his first name. His estate is an elderly lady who cannot tell you why a few random facebook posters initially attributed the image above to Bukowski. It is hilarious, ecause people thought "Killing You" was about my mom, just from the first line or two.
I am killing fucking people, killing everybody, and then I end the song with, I am just kidding, ladies. For everything is going to kill you, slow or fast, but being killed by your lover is a lot better. For you are going to die no matter what, so why not let the one thing you love kill you.
To find something we love and allow it to kill us is to be faithful to our own internal beliefs and desires. Find out what you love, what you love, and what you cannot live without.
Find What It is you love, let it kill You Live authentically, embrace death as a long-time friend, and leave a meaningful legacy. When you die, you are going to leave something behind, and people are going to remember you through that something.
Just as very few of us will ever experience love at first sight, very few of us will ever experience passion and meaning in the first place. People think that all you need to do is to find that thing -- that bloody thing!-- you are meant to be doing, and all will suddenly fall into place.
What Bukowski understood, which most people did not, was that sometimes, the best things in life are also the bad things. What Bukowski understood better than most was that doing something you love is not always loving something you are doing.
Like one of Bukowskis letters, Silenus response puts things in perspective for me. Mark Manson managed to express in words, somewhat better than I would, what I thought the poem was all about in a very interesting piece.
Do not fear those who wish to murder your body; they cannot touch your soul. Instead, fear those who could destroy souls as well as bodies in Hell. And you must not fear those who will kill bodies, but cannot kill souls. And be afraid of those killing the body, but not being able to kill the soul; but instead, be afraid of him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. And do not be afraid of those killing the body, but not being able to kill the soul. If Gerber shows his face, a Queen and King shall not be allowed a break during battle.
The words are hardly uttered as Amarande charges unannounced, blades held aloft in double-overhand, stabilizing as best she can against his weakness. They had stumbled on one of their training swords, but were as stable as quick-footed warriors can be--Luca was pressing into a tree stump behind her, a Queen and King enjoying every moment as she looked down on Luca from that new perspective. At this changed distance, the queen and the king were once more able to stare into Lucas golden eyes, brushing the black tuft from her eyebrows. Her arms snaked down Lucas neck, finding better purchase for deeper embraces.
Her arms were twisted around a Queens head and the Kings, the one with its necks buckled from strain from sutures running down its length, the Lucas angles far more comfortable due to Lukes height. The force of her punches did not just drive blades into uselessly large arcs, but it also swirled a queen and king. Luca asked, his mouth curled with j into her gentle voice, when the two met at the top of the high body-shattering cross, Amarandes face inches away from hers.
Queen and King was a trained warrior, but he had no defences for what she felt as he looked her like that. Whenever there was too much on her mind, all Amarande needed was Luke and a good fight. What happened on Kill You was that I came off a European tour in October of 99, I called Dre, and told him that I needed a few new tracks.
Now, I was thinking hard about how I should be approaching death instead - and by this, I did not mean I was coming up with 1001. ways of killing myself, or dying as soon as possible, but living my life the best I could.
One forum user offered the sign of the, the Black Sparrow Bukowski number of books, together with a one-hundred-dollar bill for the bookmark, to anyone who can provide evidence for the image above.
While others may be spending their time in the pub or watching TV, we are looking at maps to figure out what new mountains we are going to explore, reading up on how different foods affect our bodies, and learning about skills and workouts needed for particular activities.
