Of course, I have been communicating this message throughout the year, at both my job and my personal life, and not just around disability pride month. While I have focused my career of 43 years on increasing equality for individuals with disabilities, disability is deeply personal to me as well.
Instead of waiting for me and others like me to teach you what you need to know about disabilities, please take the initiative to educate yourself. Most of the things that people need to know about disability experiences are things that I cannot really teach. I have found some people pay lip service to the notion of disability equality, all too willing to drop that notion any time the concept is explicitly challenged.
As a result, this fear/avoidance results in shoddy work when confronted by disabled individuals and a world designed without adequate regard for the needs of all people living within it. When asked to consider what it is like to be blind, people spend much of their time thinking about the non-seeing part. Yes, ADAs and laws like them have been passed to help compensate for that disparity, and we are seeing improvements in the design of buildings, in public spaces, and, when the really smart folks are involved, less discrimination in the workplace and service delivery.
