The flight data recorder of the Ethiopian crash, in which 157 people died, has acquired new relevance as a ground model. Investigators investigating the crash in Indonesia are examining, among other things, how the computer instructed the plane to dive based on data from faulty sensors and whether pilots were adequately trained to respond to an emergency. The crash, which killed 189 people on board in October, bears striking similarities to the Lion Air disaster, the US National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday.
The cause of the Lion Air crash is not yet clear, but the preliminary report referred to a sensor that had recently been replaced. In it, Boeing performed a software upgrade that altered the eligibility of a new anti-stall system being developed for the 737 MAX.

In the next nine minutes, the jet warned the pilot that he was in a stable and his nose was pressed down, reports say. Still incorrectly recording a stall, the computer pushed the nose further down with the aircraft's trim system. Trim ensures that an aircraft flies straight and even and the captain struggles to climb. The FAA says it stops when the airflow under the wings of an aircraft is too low to generate lift and keep it from flying.
