The air pollution forecast for the winter season issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that air quality is currently unhealthy and that conditions are likely to worsen throughout the day and into the next day. If conditions require it, the forecast will include a warning of high pollution for certain areas of the state, such as Chico and Oroville. The sky will be orange to orange red or yellow where air quality is at its best, and there will be smoke and air from the ChICO bear fire. Protect yourself from the sea, burn indoors and avoid indoor burning wherever possible, especially in the winter months.
Skies over the Bay Area have looked apocalyptic in recent days, though air quality has been relatively good in San Francisco, Oakland and other parts of California. An ash cloud has fallen from the sky, shocking business owners and residents. Even the mayor of San Francisco felt it necessary to explain to residents how the combination of fog, smoke, and wildfire created an orange sky.
Smoke and ash from a nearby wildfire appeared to have cleared in the Bay Area on Wednesday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.
The thick concoction choked the air and blocked the sun, causing street lights in the neighborhood to remain on and authorities to urge motorists to use their headlights on the roads. Ash particles floated in the air, leaving residues on vehicle surfaces, roofs and windows.
Air quality in much of Southern California remained at good to moderate levels near ground level, but the worst concentrations of smoke were expected to contain tiny, lung-damaging particles known as PM2.5. Smoke from wildfires is causing bad air and ash clouds in parts of Southern California.
