After you crash land on your life pod, your watch is running out of time to find water, food, and to grow the gear needed for exploration. Explore the world beneath the seabed, but keep an eye on your oxygen levels, and take care to avoid threats hiding in the dark. Use your base to store resources, park vehicles, and refill your oxygen supplies while exploring the wide-open ocean.
Players are free to explore the oceans of alien planet 4546B The alien planet 4546B, after their starship, Aurora, crashes onto the planets surface. The player controls Ryley Robinson, the only surviving member of the Aurora, who is stranded on the alien planet 4546B. Ryley Robinson also learns about the existence of Precursors, an ancient, advanced species of extraterrestrials who came to Planet 4546B about one thousand years ago to find a cure to a highly contagious illness known as Kharaa bacteria.
In an effort to study the process by which eggs are laid by the one living sea emperor, the Precursors obtain eggs from an associated species, the sea dragon Leviathan, but an associated species destroys a Precursor research facility and unintentionally releases samples of a highly infectious disease into the alien planets ecosystem on 4546B. Investigating thousands of planets to try and find a cure, the Precursors finally located an organism species on 4546B they named the Sea Emperor Leviathan, that produced an enzyme which would cure the kharaa. The secondary mission of Aurora, unknown to most of the crew, was to find and, perhaps, save the crew of a vessel called Degasi, which had crashed ten years earlier on 4546B.
