The last big hike of the trip is active hiking from Kolsay Lake to the second Kolsai Lake. The hiking route consists of two lakes, with the first and second lakes located about 300 km from Almaty, Kazakhstan. This altitude complexity requires around 3 hours and a gradual rise which may turn many people away, but it's worth it in the end. The terrain of the hike is around 8 km long, winding through some stunning fir forests before you reach your destination - the crystal-clear mountain lakes with reputed healing properties.
Kolsai Lakes, located about 300 km from Almaty, are part of the Tien Shan mountain range. A gateway to the lakes is situated 15 km southwest of the village Kaindy, in Kyrgyzstan. There are no restrictions to accessing them, and it takes around 5 - 6 hours to get there from Almaty using shared taxis or private transport. The first lake is situated at an altitude of 2,000 meters and is 15 km southeast of Kaindy village. The second lake, which is 1 kilometer away and a bit higher in altitude than the first one, has a much more serene atmosphere compared to its bigger brother.
Kolsai Lakes are situated within a 4,600-kilometre natural reserve and national park, covered by the Ili Alatau Park. It’s a 5-hour scenic drive from Almaty, Kazakhstan’s capital. Turgen gorge is located between these two lake and it's the gateway to nature's pristine beauty. The mountains are of stones and arches with monuments featuring Bronze Age petroglyphs of Genghis Khan. The Singing Dunes, green rolling hills and steppes of Alatau will make one feel closer to the capital. Kolsai Lakes are truly an idyllic place to visit for those who want to explore the region’s natural beauty without having to travel too far from Almaty city.

The park is located in Talgar district, on the Belzhailau Plateau. The main feature of this park is its three crystal-clear mountain lakes, surrounded by gorgeous Tian Shan mountains. This main park area is located in the Ili Alatau Mountains and has over 4,500 peaks with one, Almatinskoye Ozero, reaching 2,500 m. The lake area includes Lakes 1 and 2 which are 4 km apart from each other and can be found on the outskirts of the park. The sparkling mirror-like surface of these lakes reflects the majestic snow-capped peaks that surround them, making it a great place for good hiking. It is said that Kolsai Lakes have healing properties due to its cavities where rivers flow into them. Visitors will definitely be charmed by this place as they enjoy its beauty and tranquility!

This lake is surrounded by trees and alpine meadows. The second lake is situated in a canyon framed by spruce trees and it takes an hour of hike to reach this fresh oasis. Mynzhylky River lies 9 km away from the lakes, with around 1000 horses grazing on its banks.

It is possible to combine your visit to the lakes with a hike along the 25 km route that passes through Valbona Valley. From there you can hike up to the Blue Lake or take a day trip to Charyn Canyon National Park. For those who love adventure and want more serious treks they can go over Sary Bulak Pass or go around Lower Lake which takes around 4 days.
Kolsai Lakes National Park is located in the golden triangle of Kazakhstan, 300 km from Almaty. The main attraction here is Lake Kaindy and its unique submerged forest. The park has a large area of untouched nature which makes it perfect for trekkers and hikers alike.
Kolsai Lakes, located in the Almaty region of Kazakhstan, are my favorite hike. These three alpine lakes are a stunning azure blue in color and are surrounded by the majestic Fann Mountains of Tajikistan. I have done a loop from Altyn Emel National Park to Kaindy Lake and back, which takes about a day. The first multi-day trek I did was from Kaindy Lake to Charyn Canyon and then onto Assy Plateau. Every bit of the journey was breathtakingly beautiful!
Kolsai Lakes, located about 300 km from Almaty, promise 3 alpine lakes in the national park. My favorite hike was to Kolsai Lake, surrounded by peaceful conifer forests. The lake system consists of two smaller lakes connected to the largest lake. TheTheth Valbona hike is also a beautiful water formation. Lake Ohara and towering mountain peaks make up the landscapes of this area as well as mountain ridges and rocky mountains. The shimmering blue waters of Kazakhstan are just mesmerizing with fir trees and rivers in the water system. This is my favorite place to visit and explore! The views of this lake system are truly stunning with its natural beauty that makes you feel at peace.
