The definition of sodbuster in dictionaries is an agriculturalist, a laborer on the land, or a homesteader. The sodbuster name is an old-timey knife, with a sodbuster designation being appropriate to such utilitarian patterns. The sodbuster is a classic work knife, and the version from W.R. Case & Sons is a quintessential example.
This article will focus on the first, a knife that cannot be any more classically American, as is the case with the case; the Junior Sodbuster. I hope this does not seem like it is going too badly, although I always try to be completely fair in my reviews, because my W.R. Case & Sons Sodbuster Jr. is still an excellent knife. Case makes the larger Sodbuster as well, which has a 4.6 handle and a 3.6 blade, as opposed to the Jr.s 3.6 handle and 2.8 blade, so it is a Jr. release since it is smaller.
It is priced at less than $25, with 3. It has a good-looking, carbon steel blade . It is a good entry-level knife, a solid entry-point into the traditional line-up. This design is not geared toward meeting the requirements of statutory carry categories, nor is it copying older knives.
I will say that this knife certainly does not pop open accidentally, and when the blade does, there is a satisfying pop. Any folding knife that is held open by some sort of a joint-like relationship between the tang and handle, and that can be untied just by pushing the tang on the blade, is a sliding joint. A small, jig-handled, multiple-bladed contraption was a first knife for many people, and it is also likely why the slip joint is making a comeback right now. I got my hands on a Sod Buster Jr. after realizing how much I enjoyed carrying a Cadet, and wanted to take a step into the traditional slide-joint knife world.
So much so, it spurred me on to write a review on another classic slide joint in my collection, the Case Sod Buster Jr. Another classic slide joint in my collection, the Case Sod Buster Jr. The grind and blade shape makes the Case Sod Buster excellent at flat-surface cutting, and being a slip joint with blades less than two inches long makes it just about as legal-compliant as you can get for a sharp object. The line on the grip makes it quite durable too, as does the Tru-Sharp steel .
Of course, if you are looking for something a bit bigger, Case does indeed offer the full-size Sod Buster, which can also easily carry. However, once you look past the squishy, emotive reaction that Sod Buster evokes, Cases Sod Buster is actually an excellent knife for throwing in a toolbox or a glovebox. It is one of those disappointing knives you buy for a novelty thrill, but eventually end up using for 60% of your everyday home tasks. Soon, this wiseguy shadiness creeps into the back of your mind and whispers, This is the only knife you actually need, so I wouldnt recommend the Case Sod Buster in this regard.
Case offers a black plastic grip for the knife, but the blade has a slew of text, which does not really speak to me. Case clearly links the name Sodbuster with Case knives designed during the 60s. In fact, in a somewhat questionable move of intellectual property, W.R. Case & Sons patented the name sodbuster.
W.R. Case & Sons did indeed designate Sodbusters with skinned blades, which I assume was meant to reference Sodbusters sharper stomach than most of the Drop Points . My understanding is that the Sodbuster pattern is anywhere between 100-130 years old, and came out of Germany as something like a folding butchers knife, or clasped knife. The Kershaw Federalist is a modern tribute to the old-school knives, but still looks and functions remarkably similar to their modern-day knife styles. Case in point, a couple years back, I bought a small, plastic-handled lockback knife from Buck, and that thing was such a piece of garbage I did not even bother reviewing it.
It is going to be the buyers responsibility to take apart & unplug all of the gear. Additional handling & delivery fees, determined by dealer, will be made clear upon sale.
Dickey & Associates Auctioneers makes no warranties that any Lots are completed, in working condition, or with any guarantee as set forth in any such statement. Production is going offshore, but this is so as much because we like it this way as because of no reason. History has shown us that if we decide that we want something done, by the shit, we will get it done, and as far as I am concerned, that is not changing.
My dad just finished 5th grade, he is only a senior in the Sodbusters, but a nifty, clever bloke. One day, Weston R. Sodbuster, a daring Indian Scout from West Point, met Two-Feather, the most viciously macho of the tribe. Sodbuster was a program created under Section 12 of the Food Security Act of 1985 designed to deter plows that cleared erodible prairies for use as cropland. A simple, easy-to-use handle combined with a blade that is well designed for general use makes Sodbuster an excellent knife to get started with.
