It is one of those techniques by ear, but by science, which is the technique that I used here at Sound Isolation Studio, though I supplemented that with calibrated equipment and software, because eventually, if you want to have confidence in your ears, you have got to do science, and it is wonderful. It solves the problem of wanting to hear noisy music at night without annoying anybody, though it does not do a lot for controlling the vibrations below the treble. A completely floating floor will actually encourage the transmission of subsonic vibrations, making it perfect for the listening room; as you want to hear the subsonic vibrations, not cancel them out. You want to be the one doing the filtering and mixing, and you have to feel this in order to do mxing; so, two units of a deep bass subwoofer are necessary.
Doing deep bass monaural using only a single deep bass subwoofer does not work, as this gives you auditory illusion, and you do not want this specific auditory illusion, even in a studio that is not bigger than a walk-in closet. PreSonus studio monitors and deep bass subwoofers both come with honest specifications, and it is part of why I love them. For one, P2P blocking/delay/filtering schemes being thrown about the world are having no effect on most of these services. For users, legal, on-demand access to massive amounts of high-quality videos eliminates the risk of litigation, but has other benefits.
